 Philippines is working to regulate AI and fake news


Washington, Nov 15 (Reuters) - The Philippines is currently figuring out how to address AI usage. Congress hasn’t passed a general law on AI yet, although some acts promote related innovation in the workforce. There are several bills that are eager to make advancements in technology, but there are also bills focusing on regulating its use. The Anti-Deepfake Personality Rights Protection Act penalizes the exploitation of AI to alter a person’s appearance or actions. Laws in the future will likely focus on a more protectionist approach and the impact on employment. The Department of Science and Technology have generated a National AI Road Map for the future.


The Philippines also view fake news as a serious problem and are launching campaigns to help citizens identify fake news, specifically youth. They also are partnering with news organizations to create fact checking initiatives. 


In addition, while the Philippines acknowledges new technology as a way to help countries develop, they state that “fully autonomous weapons on offensive should be banned”. They want to create an organization to develop a structure that prevents the weaponization of this developing technology so that it’s only used defensively. They also support a framework to increase human oversight in the development of weapons to ensure that they aren’t misused.

The East Germany Prime Minister is willing to work with the West Germany Prime Minister and is stating that this is the time to work together to improve the state of foreign diplomacy.
